Things To See & Do

In The Town

Estepa is a fully serviced town that hosts all the basics that you would require including numerous small convenience stores (one of which is almost opposite the house). "The Shop" is run by Miguel and his wife, they stock a variety of local produce and are always happy to help.  You will also find a vast array of tapas bars, restaurants and shops, 2 large supermarkets, 2 petrol stations, banks, a couple of night clubs, a medical centre, town hall, tourist information centre and library.

Local Market - The main town square becomes home to Estepa's local market 3 times per week on Mondays, Wednesday & Fridays.

Municipal Pool - Open air with large "picnic area" and it's own tapas bar which is a great place to go in the summer (July - September).  Close by are the communal tennis courts and football pitch.

Horse Riding Stables - On the outskirts of the town you will find a few horse riding stables.

Sweet Museum - The small museum dedicated to the history of Estepa's biscuit tradition is located within in the La Estepeña biscuit factory.

Archaeological Museum - The Museo Padre Martín Recio (C/.Ancha 14), has a collection of local finds dating back to the Paleolithic period.

Hotel Manantial de Roya - On the outskirts of the town (15 minutes walk), surrounded by nature and on the north of the Sierra de Becerra Mountains this beauty spot has a municipal BBQ area with stone built ovens and also a natural water spring.

The City Walls - Still surrounding the old town on the San Cristobal hill are the remains of the original city walls, first built in the 10th century by the Moors.

Convent of Santa Clara - On the top of the San Cristobal hill (a peaceful beauty spot with amazing views), behind the church of Santa Maria is the Baroque convent of Santa Clara, built by two of the local marqueses and the Franciscans.

18th Century Palacio de los Marqueses de Cerverales - (officially declared a National Historic Artistic Monument in 1984) was completed in 1756 by the first Marquis of Cerverales, Manuel Bejarano y Campañón.
This palace is the finest work of civic architecture in the city.

Plaza El Carmen - Built in honour of the Virgin Carmen, the plaza was expanded in 1745 to accommodate a plaza de toros (bullring). Spain's shifting political views have seen it baptised with various names over the centuries: Constitution Square, Royal Square, Republic Square, Generalísimo (General Franco) Square among them.  It's more commonly known to townsfolk as 'el salón' (the lounge), and is the place where many of them congregate under the shade of its trees and in the cool from its central fountain.

Please note: Estepa is a beautiful town steeped in history with magnificent scenery, but the reason it has such wonderful scenery is that it is on a hill.  Although the main "Avenida de Andalucia" with it's shops, bars and restaurants is fairly flat, to access the rest of the town you will need to be prepared to walk up and down some hills.
